Couple sues developer for fraud

A St. Louis woman says her home is making her and her dogs sick. About five years ago, Richard and Shirley Sanders paid $204,000 for a new home built on 17th Street without knowing that the land used to be an auto wrecking yard in the 1970s, they say in a lawsuit against the developer, Choate Construction & Development Inc. of Maryland Heights. Within a year of buying the property, the couple began to find auto parts in the soil. Within three years, Shirley Sanders, who landscaped the yard, developed tumors on her legs.

Michael Moore finds financial expert in UMKC law professor

A law professor in Missouri has joined the ranks of Charlton Heston and the CEO of General Motors as interview subjects in Michael Moore films. He comes off a little better, however.

The documentary filmmaker features Bill Black (pictured), associate professor of economics and law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, prominently in his latest film, "Capitalism: A Love Story."

Attorney jailed on criminal contempt charges

The Missouri Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys and the American Civil Liberties Union have jumped to the defense of Douglas County attorney Carl Smith (pictured), who was hit with a 120-day sentence on criminal contempt charges for critical statements he wrote about an associate circuit judge, R. Craig Carter, and prosecutors in an appellate brief for a client.

Smith has been sitting in jail since Sept. 28.

Lawyer worked with feds in arrest of railway union head

Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen local Kansas City chair Bill Paalhar leads the union's monthly meeting at Argosy Casino in Riverside on Wednesday. The labor union’s president, Edward W. Rodzwicz, was arrested and charged this week after allegedly taking bribes from a St. Louis attorney, who was part of a federal investigation.
