A U.S. House committee voted to hold former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify about her role in scrutinizing Tea Party groups seeking tax exemptions.

The Missouri Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys and the American Civil Liberties Union have jumped to the defense of Douglas County attorney Carl Smith (pictured), who was hit with a 120-day sentence on criminal contempt charges for critical statements he wrote about an associate circuit judge, R. Craig Carter, and prosecutors in an appellate brief for a client.

Smith has been sitting in jail since Sept. 28.
