Major businesses can’t join sewer suit

A group of seven businesses in Missouri, including giants Anheuser-Busch, Monsanto and Boeing Co., were again denied a motion to intervene in a Clean Water Act enforcement action filed against the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District by the federal and state governments, according to a federal appeals court ruling Monday. The United States and the state of Missouri filed a complaint alleging the St. Louis sewer district discharged raw sewage into local waterways from 2000 to 2005.

EPA, Independence reach agreement over sewer system

The federal government and the city of Independence have reached a settlement aimed to force improvements to the city's sewer system. Under the proposed settlement filed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City last week, Independence agreed to make improvements to its sewer system to end the sewage overflows. The EPA estimates the cost of those improvements at $35 million.
