8th Circuit rejects excessive force, illegal search claims

Civil rights lawyer W. Bevis Schock (pictured) lost another appeal in a lawsuit filed against the south St. Louis County city of Bella Villa and its chief of police, Edward Locke Jr. On Monday, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a summary judgment and jury verdict in favor of Locke and the city in a lawsuit filed by William and Mary Lou Cavataio. The Cavataios alleged Locke used excessive force when he arrested William Cavataio, then 75, and that he squeezed Mary Lou Cavataio's left breast as she was about to drive her husband to the hospital.

School district sued over sale of buildings

The St. Louis Public School District is facing a lawsuit over its refusal to sell vacant school buildings to charter schools. The suit seeks the removal of deed restrictions placed on the sale of closed public school buildings by the Special Administrative Board of the Saint Louis Public School District. The deed restrictions prohibit buyers of closed SLPS buildings from reopening the building as a school for 100 years.
