Cole County judge upholds 2008 law

St. Louis County Deputy Sheriff Glenn Duncan signs off on a garnishment paper delivery after giving the papers to Hartmann Towing accountant Gail Steele last week. A Cole County judge has upheld the constitutionality of a 2008 state law calling for a $10 extra fee for serving such papers. The state Legislature passed a bill last year that increased the amount it costs for sheriff's offices to serve legal papers, such as a summons, subpoena or other court order in civil cases.

Raytown lawyer Coleman gets one-year probation

The Missouri Supreme Court placed a Jackson County lawyer who has a history with the Office of Chief Disciplinary counsel on one year of probation Tuesday. Complaints against Raytown attorney Larry D. Coleman (pictured) go back to the 1990s. The disciplinary counsel in April asked the court to suspend Coleman's law license, contending that he charged unreasonable fees and commingled his personal funds and client funds in his IOLTA account, as well accepted a settlement without client approval.
