Gov. Nixon convenes DWI summit

Prosecutors, judges consider changes to state statutes, procedures

State courts plan to cut $3 million in 2010 budget

State courts are looking at the second year in a row of cutting $3 million from its general revenue, and circuit courts are going to bear the brunt of the cuts. The budget was the last issue addressed at a meeting of presiding judges Tuesday. The $3 million cut represents about 2 percent of the judiciary's $164 million general revenue budget, Chief Justice William Ray Price Jr. (pictured on far right) said on the opening day of the Judicial Conference.

Fired ALJs can keep their jobs, judge says

A Cole County judge said three administrative law judges can't be terminated from their positions for budgetary reasons. Earlier this year, five administrative law judge positions were cut. Four of the judges were let go, and a retiring judge was not replaced. Gov. Jay Nixon said the move was meant as a cost-cutting measure in the midst of a tough budgetary situation. In a decision released Wednesday, Cole County circuit judge Jon Beetem issued a permanent injunction that keeps the three men in their positions as administrative law judges.

Smith, Brown resign seats; Nixon sets special election

State legislators Jeff Smith (left) and Steve Brown have submitted their resignation letters today to the governor's office after both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obstruct justice charges. Nixon announced this afternoon that he's setting Nov. 3 as the special election date to fill the seats vacated by Smith, a senator from St. Louis, and Brown, a House member from Clayton and an attorney.

Dameron named as AG’s chief of staff

Stueve Siegel Hanson attorney Matthew Dameron is the new chief of staff to Attorney General Chris Koster. Koster made the announcement today that Dameron will replace Robert Kenney, who was recently appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon to the Public Service Commission. As chief of staff, Dameron will oversee the daily operations of the AG office.
