State wins $1.8 million judgment that defense says it can’t pay

A St. Louis County court has awarded a $1.8 million judgment to the state of Missouri and Missouri HealthNet in a civil fraud lawsuit charging a licensed clinical social worker committed fraud. According to Case.net, the state already settled claims against Stephanie Spilton's husband, Gerard Moskowitz, and her corporation, On-Site Counseling Inc., for $55,000, so the net judgment against Spilton is $1.75 million.

AG seeks to oust Dent County prosecutor Sparks

Attorney General Chris Koster (pictured in a file photo) wants to remove Dent County Prosecutor Jessica Sparks from office. Pointing to a number of maladies accrued in recent months, Koster's office filed a motion on Friday known as "quo warranto" against the Republican prosecutor. Quo warranto, in essence, is put forward against an officeholder who isn't properly executing his or her duties. Under provisions of the motion, a judge can oust somebody from a position. The petition accuses Sparks of refusing "to perform official acts and duties which by law it is her duty to do or perform."

Koster investigating Craigslist ads

Attorney General Chris Koster said he intends to meet with Craigslist representatives tomorrow in New York City to express his concerns about what he says are advertisements for prostitution. Koster is representing a group of the nation's attorneys general, which includes attorneys general from Illinois and Connecticut. Koster (shown here in a file photo) said his office has been investigating the site and wants to reach an agreement with Craigslist to stop displaying ads for "illegal erotic activities."

Koster seeks raises for new AGs

As the state prepares to complete next year's budget, Attorney General Chris Koster's thoughts have also turned to money - both for his lawyers and for the state as a whole. Koster on Thursday said he intends to increase pay for entry-level lawyers in the attorney general's office to $42,500, a 23 percent increase from the current $32,900. Koster said current pay levels are less than those of public defenders and many prosecutor's offices. "Bringing this office into something akin to basic economic parity is my No. 1 priority," Koster said Thursday.

AG Koster sues mortgage companies for fraud

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster has sued two mortgage brokers, alleging the companies fraudulently misrepresented themselves in refinance letters to consumers by appearing to be supported by the consumers' banks and tied to the federal government. The lawsuits filed against Gold Star Home Mortgage and Oxford Lending Group are part of Koster's "zero tolerance" campaign against mortgage scams.
