Public defenders get fraction of promised stimulus funds

A matter of grave appeal

When early residents of Platte County were laid to rest in their family cemeteries, little did they know that one day their lands would be part of Kansas City International Airport.

Kansas City, which owns much of the land surrounding the airport, asked an appeals court on Wednesday to help it move four old cemeteries that it says lie in the path of development. However, living relatives are fighting the move.

Two lawyers vie for KC mayoral seat

Attorneys are starting to line up for the Kansas City mayor's office. More than 16 months away from the election, two area lawyers are looking to unseat Mayor Mark Funkhouser.

Mike Burke (pictured) is the most recent to put in a mayoral bid for the February 2011 election, and Sly James, of the Sly James Law Firm in Kansas City, has been raising money for his campaign all year.

Shipment liability dispute draws review by U.S. Supreme Court

Railcars sit on tracks near downtown St. Louis. The U.S. Supreme Court will use a dispute involving a unit of Union Pacific Corp. to clarify the liability rules for international shipments that are damaged while being transported by rail or truck within the country.

The justices on Tuesday agreed to hear appeals in a dispute with companies suing over alleged property damage from a 2005 train derailment.
