SLU, feds take tax case out of court

A university and the federal government have agreed to resolve a lawsuit over taxing medical residents.

Saint Louis University sued the U.S. government last fall alleging it overpaid $24.6 million in Social Security and Medicare taxes from 1995 through March 2005.

Several other teaching medical programs have made similar claims, including Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which sued seeking a nearly $25 million refund.

Despite unease, court OKs KCP&L purchase

The Missouri Court of Appeals Western District said Tuesday that the state's Public Service Commission followed the applicable statutes and regulations in allowing KCP&L's holding company, Great Plains Energy Inc., to take over Aquila and operate it as a subsidiary.

Man’s indictment tossed over speedy trial issues

A man accused of a shooting 12 years ago will not have to stand trial because police waited too long to track him down, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled in a 4-3 decision Friday. But Chief Justice William Ray Price Jr. [left] dissented, saying Garcia "is the principal cause of the police's delay in locating him" because he fled the state.
