A couple who lost their investment in a home construction project won a $140,000 verdict against the title company that recorded their deed of trust. James and Jill Clemens purchased 4 acres of land in Wentzville in 2007 and contracted Routt Homes to build a custom home upon it. The couple then transferred the property to Routt to provide the company with collateral for an $800,000 construction loan. The couple agreed to accept a $95,000 deed of trust as security in case the deal went bad, said the couple’s attorney, Allen Press, of Green Jacobson in Clayton.

The family of a 9-year-old girl who allegedly was sexually assaulted at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Clayton earlier this month filed a civil lawsuit in St. Louis County Circuit Court on Tuesday. Named as defendants are the hotel company, its management company, Enterprise Leasing Co. and Daniel Hughes. The suit asks for more than $5 million in punitive damages. Hughes, of Pennsylvania, allegedly was in St. Louis for an Enterprise training session March 6 when he got a key for the wrong room from a desk clerk around 4 a.m.
