Assets at less than $50,000; liabilities are up to $100 million

The largest homebuilder in St. Charles County says it is the latest victim of the nationwide credit crisis. Whittaker Builders Inc. filed for bankruptcy Oct. 15 in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.

According to the company's Web site, the decision to pursue reorganization under Chapter 11 comes after "exhaustive" efforts to refinance or extend maturing debt to creditors. Attached to the petition was a list of 172 creditors, ranging from utility companies and municipalities to suppliers and individuals.
