Overwhelming Republican opposition to Sonia Sotomayor's U.S. Supreme Court nomination widens a partisan gulf that has lawmakers voting on ideology rather than qualifications. With only nine Republicans, including Missouri Sen. Kit Bond, voting for her, Sotomayor became the third nominee in a row to be opposed by at least half the minority party's senators.

Bond backs Sotomayor

Missouri Sen. Kit Bond is the latest Republican senator to back Judge Sonia Sotomayor for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. Speaking on the Senate floor this morning, Bond said while he endorses Sotomayor it "does not mean that I support the way Judge Sotomayor approaches judging." He cited several Sotomayor opinions he disagrees with, including the Ricci firefighter case. However, Bond said he believes "that Judge Sotomayor has proven herself a well qualified jurist."
