St. Louis attorney hit with $2M malpractice verdict

After an 11-day legal malpractice trial in St. Louis Circuit Court, a jury ruled against St. Louis solo attorney Daniel Finney Jr. (pictured) on Sept. 8 and ordered him to pay $2 million to the family of a deceased worker. The family of Serif Selimanovic, who died in 2002 in a workplace accident, claimed Finney failed to fully investigate a possible wrongful death suit against Selimanovic's employer, Brentwood Plastics. The legal malpractice suit also faulted Finney for not properly communicating with Selimanovic's Bosnian widow, Semsa, who struggled with English.

State sues major bankruptcy firm

Lawsuit claims St. Louis charity was misled, lost millions for potential services

A St. Louis not-for-profit has filed a legal malpractice claim against national bankruptcy firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges (whose New York City offices is pictured), alleging that the firm misled the organization into filing for bankruptcy and caused it to lose millions. The National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church, or NBA, argue that Weil Gotshal had misrepresented the NBA's creditors' willingness to negotiate an out-of-court restructure of the organization and misled it on the cost of bankruptcy proceedings.

Law firm vindicated in malpractice case

A St. Louis County jury has cleared Sandberg Phoenix & von Gontard and one of its attorneys, Rodney Sharp (pictured, watching the jury), of all wrongdoing in a legal malpractice suit against them. Physician Hamid Hosseini had filed suit against Sharp, alleging that the attorney had negligently represented him because Sharp had failed to ask about all relevant insurance carriers in Hosseini's medical malpractice suit. The jury deliberated for about two hours after the six-day trial before issuing a verdict on Monday.
