County probate division will come under circuit clerk

In an effort to improve efficiency and reduce redundancy, the St. Louis County Circuit Court's probate division will become part of the circuit clerk's office on Friday. The change means Circuit Clerk Joan Gilmer, instead of Probate Judge Gary Gaertner Jr. (pictured), will have the authority to hire and fire the clerks in the probate division. The Circuit Court Budget Committee of the Missouri Supreme Court has been pushing for consolidation of probate clerks and circuit clerks for about 13 years, said Greg Linhares, state court administrator.

Employment discrimination lawsuit settled

A significant employment law case, Douglas Daugherty v. The City of Maryland Heights, has settled, but city officials refuse to turn over the financial details of the settlement in compliance with an open records request. Daugherty sued Maryland Heights in 2003 alleging that he was wrongfully terminated from his position of police captain on the basis of age and disability. His attorney, Mary Anne Sedey (pictured), of Sedey Harper, confirmed that the parties had settled but would not disclose any details concerning the settlement. Missouri Lawyers Media made a Sunshine Law request to the city for the settlement amounts that was denied.
