State courts plan to cut $3 million in 2010 budget

State courts are looking at the second year in a row of cutting $3 million from its general revenue, and circuit courts are going to bear the brunt of the cuts. The budget was the last issue addressed at a meeting of presiding judges Tuesday. The $3 million cut represents about 2 percent of the judiciary's $164 million general revenue budget, Chief Justice William Ray Price Jr. (pictured on far right) said on the opening day of the Judicial Conference.

Price ‘open to listening’ to Missouri Plan changes

The judge who will soon be the main steward of the Missouri Plan said Tuesday that he's open to some changes in its structure. Judge William Ray Price Jr. will take office as chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court on July 1, a position that makes him the head of the commission that selects candidates for judicial vacancies.

‘Courts need to be impartial’

Beyond the multitude of cases that were decided over the past two years, Laura Denvir Stith's tenure as chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court was notable for her role defending the Nonpartisan Court Plan. Stith will be stepping down from the chief justice position at the end of June, handing the job over to Judge William Ray Price Jr.
