Planned Parenthood sues over ballot items

Planned Parenthood sued the state this week protesting two ballot initiatives proposed by anti-abortion, anti-stem cell funding groups. One ballot initiative would restrict state funding for any hospitals or research institutions that perform medically unnecessary abortions or conduct stem cell research. The other initiative creates a new definition of "person," saying the term shall be applied to "every human being from the beginning of the biological development of that human being." The proposals are slated to appear on 2010 ballots.

Abortion clinic restrictions get rehearing

Whatever the fate of a 2007 state statute regulating abortion clinics, the outcome will not be due to a lack of judges. Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri went back before the Missouri Court of Appeals Western District on Thursday. The organization argues the law, which regulates ambulatory surgery centers that provide abortions, shouldn't apply to clinics that only dispense such drugs as the RU-486 pill.
