Bryan Cave sued for alleged malpractice in New York

A New York stock lending group has sued Bryan Cave for legal malpractice, claiming Bryan Cave lawyers helped a former managing partner steal trade secrets and form a competing company. The suit, filed June 29 in the Manhattan-based federal court, also claims Bryan Cave charged the company, American Institutional Partners, for its legal work in forming the competing company, Talos Partners. Pelican Equity, which owns the rights to AIP, paid Bryan Cave for that work, according to the suit.

Bryan Cave chairman Lents gets second term

Bryan Cave partners re-elected Don Lents to a second five-year term as chairman. Lents' second term will start in October. Under Lents' leadership, the firm grew revenue from $411 million to $502.5 million in 2008. In January, 220-attorney Atlanta firm Powell Goldstein was added in a merger. The firm now has 1,100 lawyers and other consulting professionals. Lents also has overseen the firm's response to the recession, including the laying off of 58 attorneys and 76 staff members in February, the cutting of associate salaries, and reduction of partner and counsel compensation.

Salary cuts coming at Bryan Cave firm

Bryan Cave plans to cut salaries of its junior lawyers by 10 percent next month, according to a memo from chairman Don Lents cited Thursday afternoon by the blog Above the Law. A spokesman for Bryan Cave, Luis Mocete, confirmed the memo's authenticity this afternoon but declined to comment further. The memo posted on Above the Law states that in most offices the salary cuts will kick in July 1. However, it says Missouri associates won't see their pay drop until July 13 to follow legal notice requirements.

Bryan Cave renews lease in Kansas City until 2025

Bryan Cave has renewed its lease for about 100,000 square feet at One Kansas City Place in downtown Kansas City until 2025. The firm is keeping six contiguous floors, but swapping the 32nd floor for the 38th. The 38th floor will be renovated, but no improvements to the other floors are being considered, said Bob Thompson, managing partner of the office. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bryan Cave made $1M in fees on Quellos scheme

A federal grand jury in Seattle has reportedly indicted three people in a $1.3 billion tax fraud scheme, called one of the largest in U.S. history. The L.A. Times has reported that St. Louis-based Bryan Cave was mentioned in the indictment for writing tax opinions assuring investors that the tax scheme was legal. The Times reported that according to a 2006 U.S. Senate investigation into the scheme, Bryan Cave made more than $1 million in fees but claimed the firm didn't know how the portfolio was formed.

Report: Bryan Cave partner was AIG overseer

AIG paid Bryan Cave about $20 million to monitor its finances as part of a 2004 deal with the federal government, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. James Cole, a partner in the firm's Washington office, attended top-level board-committee meetings and was responsible for offering general corporate oversight for the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to the report. Bryan Cave Chairman Don Lents told Missouri Lawyers Weekly in a phone call Friday afternoon that "we're not in a position to comment."
