Judges discuss adding courtroom

The courthouse in Hillsboro may finally get another jury-capable courtroom, using savings from energy improvements. The county received a $1.9 million energy conservation block grant to make energy improvements to county buildings. Many of those improvements would be at the courthouse.

At the court en banc meeting on Monday, Circuit Judge Gary Kramer (pictured) of the Facilities Improvement Committee, suggested the circuit court use the savings to renovate the old juvenile division offices into a courtroom with office space.

Drury appeals billboard denials

The city of Arnold welcomes the new business, but not necessarily the billboard signs to go along with it.

Drury Development Corp. is building a six-story hotel with 155 rooms at Highway 141 and Interstate 55 that will be Drury Inn and Suites. The existing Drury Inn will be renovated and become a Pear Tree Inn.

To advertise its business, Drury would like to install two billboard signs, one at 2120 Michigan Ave. and another at 3401 Robinson Road in Arnold. Due to variances that would be required from city code, the signs require conditional use permits.

Doe Run differs with EPA

Recent test results of lead levels from the Doe Run Co. in Herculaneum could either show that the situation has deteriorated or that it has improved, depending on which entity is interpreting the results.

In July, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency directed Doe Run to expand the area to collect samples of lead in the surface soil and gravel driveways at residential properties within one mile of the lead smelter.

According to the EPA, of 372 properties sampled, 129 had at least one area exceeding the 400 parts/million action level for lead.

Doe Run sees the results differently.
