Arnold has a lot to celebrate this month. For almost 40 years the city has celebrated its incorporation in the yearly community event Arnold Days. This year is no different.

With nearly a dozen suicides or attempts reported in Jefferson County so far this year, efforts are being made to bring awareness to this silent killer.

Jefferson County Executive Ken Waller had hired one of two replacements for the open positions in the public works department.

Former county prosecutor Daniel James filed a case against County Executive Ken Waller and Jefferson County after he was fired on Jan. 3, 2011, the same day Waller took office. James believes he was dismissed because of his affiliation with the Democratic Party after the Republican party took control of Jefferson County.

A recount of ballots in the Republican primary race for Jefferson County Council, District 4, yielded the same results – a four-vote victory for George Engelbach over Councilman Charles Groeteke.

A new Medicine Shoppe is scheduled to open in Pevely in the next couple of months. The pharmacy will be in the new 21,000-square-foot commercial development at the intersection of Highway 61-61 (Commercial Blvd) and Highway Z (Abby Lane).

Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Crystal City will be able to expand its medical services with the recent announcement of a partnership with Mercy Health of St. Louis.

The Jefferson County Veterans Tribute committee will host a kickoff banquet Sept. 8 to raise funds for the Jefferson County Veterans Memorial Park. The park will be located on property next to the VFW Post #2593 in Arnold.

A controversial bill that would have required anyone seeking licenses, permits, bid awards and other matters to have proof of payment on all real and personal property taxes has died.

Only one local election contest was close enough to warrant a recount — County Council District 4. In that race, incumbent Charles Groeteke received 1,032 votes, apparently losing to Republican challenger George “Bob” Engelbach, who had 1,036 votes.
