Polsinelli in talks to combine IP practice with Novak Druce

Polsinelli is in talks with leadership at intellectual property firm Novak Druce about merging the two firm’s intellectual property practices and bringing a group of IP attorneys to Polsinelli.

“This will further build the firm’s nationally recognized Intellectual Property practice and meet the growing demand for post grant patent work,” according to a statement from Polsinelli on Friday.

The deal would make Polsinelli’s IP practice among the largest in the country, and would expand the firm’s national footprint to include new offices in Houston and Boston.

Final numbers of lateral attorney moves and new office openings “will be determined upon completion of the deal,” the firm said, stressing that final discussions are ongoing.

“The expansion of our IP practice aligns with our strategic plan to be a leading national law firm focused on IP and IP litigation as well as health care, financial services, real estate, corporate services for middle market clients, and business litigation,” Chairman Russ Welsh said.

Missouri Lawyers Weekly recently published an article in its “New Partners” section looking at intellectual property as a growing area of law.

“What’s happened is the nature of modern technology, the ease of communication and the ability to do business and take advantage of what’s available on the internet, has created new issues,” said David Deal, co-director of Washington University School of Law’s Intellectual Property Clinic.

Twelve of the 155 new partners Missouri firms reported to Missouri Lawyers this year listed intellectual property as a primary practice area, up from seven that listed it last year.
