Kaplan Lumber to cease operations

An old, established name in the local business community is closing its doors this month. The approximately 34 employees at Kaplan Lumber Co. were told Thursday morning that the business would cease operations on Dec. 17, Kaplan Sales Manager Mike Templeton confirmed during a telephone interview Friday. The company, which operates a 160,000-square-foot facility in Wright City and has an office in St. Peters, has been in business for more than 80 years.

During a slow economy, simply surviving can be seen by some as a success. But an international business strategist is encouraging St. Charles retailers to use this time to assess their businesses and make necessary changes now that will pay off big later.

Barbara Wold, a California-based speaker, author and business strategist, last week gave a seminar for St. Charles business owners on "How to Prosper During a Slow Economy." Her recommendations ranged from forming a customer focus group to starting a frequent buyer program and sending thank you notes to customers.
